GB Advance Multi-Game
Cartridges
GameBoy Advance / GBASP Multicart sometimes also called MultiGame
cartridge is a game cartridge that has a considerably bigger
memory inside that enables it to have multi-games
on a single cart. From outside multicart looks just the same as
any regular GBA card and has the exact same shape. Nintendo made
Gameboy Cartridges are usually 32M 64M or 128M big when as multicarts
can be 350M and even bigger - now as you see that makes it possible
to put ~4 to 6 GBA roms and say a hundred or so NES roms on the
cartridge and that is exactly what manufacturers in Asia are doing.
When you
play a game from a multicart there is no different in gameplay
and all the options like saving the game progress and multiplayer
linking works exactly the same as in single game pack except
for one thing - the BOOT menu. After seeing the GAMEBOY logo a
nice little menu appears that lists all the games on the multicart.
Scroll up and down with the direction pad, find the game you like
and push [a] or [start] button to play. Works the same as on GBA
Flash Cards..
As you know Nintendo has released a limited number of Nintendo
8-bit Entertainment System games in "NES Classic" series.
Well we have been playing these good old nes games on the multicarts and gba
flash cards for years and unlike Nintendo cartridges - multicart
can include a 100 or more of the small sized classic originals
from the old days.
How Gameboy Multicarts compare to GBA
Flash Cards
Most important difference between the is that GBA Flash is Re-writable
when as Multicart is just like normal Nintendo cartridges Read
Only Memory - ROM card. That explains why multigame cats cost a
lot less han flash cards.
Some people have asked us "can I buy
a cheap gba multigame cartridge - erase it with a flash linker
and write new roms to the card" - NO - you can not do that. As
we wrote before multi-game carts are Read Only so way to erase.
What you see is what you get. No way of modifying the cart after
it has been manufactured.
Pros and Cons of getting a multicart.
+ One cartridge to carry with you - 100 and more games
on it.
+ Cost the same us 1-2 Nintendo
single-game cartridges (~$50 USD).
+ Cheaper than re-writable gba flash card.
+ No need to look for NES and GBA roms on the internet.
+ All the games have working Save Games. (No need for rom patching etc.)
+ Easy to use for non advanced PC users and younger kids.
- Unlike on GBA Flash, Multi-Games can not be erased/replaced once
they are completed.
- You can not pick the exact list of games you want
on the multicart - choose from existing carts.
(modification service is supposed to be introduced
later)
Things to look out for when buying a GBA
Multicart:
- Don't judge the multicart from the front of the box- look at
the back of the package to see the list of games that are on
the gameboy multicart as the images on the front may not reflect
all the games and can be misleading. Sometimes an image from
a GBA game is printed when in fact there is a NES version on
the cart.
- Not all of the games on the cartridge are GBA titles. Large
number of games are from "Nes Classic" series. Be sure to check
which of the games are GAMEBOY ADVANCE and which ones are NES
/ Famicom etc. Usually the first games at top of the list are
printed in RED and are GB Advance titles.
